What to See In Pearl Harbor, HI
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is named such because pearl oysters were once harvested there. Unfortunately, the name has taken on a different connotation since the events of December 7th, 1941. On that date, the USS Arizona was hit by a bomb, killing over 1100 crewmen. Following that blitz attack, the Naval base was aerially attacked by the Japanese, killing over 1000 more soldiers and civilian workers on the base. Today, Pearl Harbor is a popular tourist destination for people all over the world but particularly those from the United States.
While in Pearl Harbor, there is much to see. The most popular sites to see revolve around the tragedy that occurred so many years ago:
USS Arizona Memorial
Starting at the Visitor Center, tourists can watch a film about the attack and look at the various plaques that honor the lives lost that fateful day. Visitors will be taken by shuttle boat to a floating memorial built over the hull of the Battleship USS Arizona. The shrine room holds the names of all of the men who perished that day aboard the Arizona where visitors can pay their respects.
Battleship Missouri Memorial
Aboard the Battleship Missouri, or Mighty Mo, is where General Macarthur accepted the surrender of the Japanese. The ship is now a museum exhibiting artifacts from three wars and over 50 years of service.
USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park
Visitors to the Bowfin are able to explore the 10,000 square foot submarine and learn the history of undersea battle. Interactive gun and torpedo exhibits are located on the grounds of the park as well as the Waterfront Memorial.
Pacific Aviation Museum
Full of WWII fighter planes and bombers, the museum offers interactive simulators as well as exhibits showing military uniforms of the time.
USS Oklahoma Memorial
429 crewmen lost their lives aboard the USS Oklahoma when it capsized during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The memorial honors these men as well as the 32 who were rescued two days later.
