More About The Honolulu Airport

Honolulu International Airport opened in 1927 as John Rodgers Airport. Commercial passengers began flying out of the airport in 1929. The airport’s name was changed to Honolulu Airport in 1947 and to Honolulu International Airport in 1951.

The airport is six miles from downtown Honolulu and ten miles from Waikiki. Honolulu city buses stop at the airport. Passengers can take buses from the airport to downtown Honolulu, Waikiki and the Kalihi Transit Center. The Waikiki Airport Express will take passengers to all hotels in Waikiki. Passengers can take taxis from the airport. The airport is served by several car rental companies.

Honolulu International Airport has an Overseas Terminal, an Interisland Terminal and a Commuter Terminal. Ticket counters are on the second floors of the Overseas Terminal and the Interisland Terminal. The gates for departing and arriving passengers are also on the terminals’ second floors. Baggage claim is on the first floors. The Commuter Terminal has ticket counters and gates on the first floor. The airport provides free shuttle service between terminals.

There are plenty of places to eat and shop in the Overseas Terminal. Chicken, pork, ribs and pizza are served at Lahaina Chicken & Pizza. Quiznos has a variety of subs. Other restaurants in the terminal are Burger King and Samurai Sushi. Tired passengers will appreciate the coffee at Starbucks. Passengers who want Hawaiian souvenirs will find them at Take Home the Aloha and Hawaiian Isle Memories. Books and magazines are sold at Pages & Pages.

The Overseas Terminal has a Business Center and a place to exchange currency.

Restaurants in the Interisland Terminal offer a variety of food. Lahaina Chicken has chicken, roast beef and ribs on the menu. Ice cream and sandwiches are available at Lani Moo’s Tropical Treats. Burger King and Chow Mein Express are located in this terminal. Passengers can buy snacks and reading material at Newsstand.

Passengers in the Commuter Terminal can buy snacks at the Mahalo Bar and reading material at Newsstand.

Information desks and ATMs are located throughout the airport. The Lost and Found Department is in the Overseas Terminal parking garage.
