All About Downtown Honolulu

The area of Downtown Honolulu is one mile across, and is a concentrated area full of many exciting attractions for tourists. It is easy to get around by foot thanks to pedestrian crossings, although many buses serve the area as well for those who would prefer to ride in air-conditioned comfort.

The Capitol State Building and surrounding buildings is probably the biggest reason for visitors to explore the downtown Honolulu area. The Capitol Building was created in 1969, and have several symbolic pieces of architecture representing palm trees and volcanoes. Juts next door is Iolani Palace, the 19th century which was home to the last two monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Also in this area is the Washington Place, which is the current home of the governor's mansion. The home was once the private residence of Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani.

For those interesting in shopping on the island of Oahu, no place is better than the Ala Moana Mall, located in the downtown area of Honolulu. Ala Moana is the largest open-air shopping center in the world, and is home to countless stores, restaurants, and attractions for visitors and locals alike. With over 56 million annual visitors, the mall is a heaving and exciting place to visit. Whatever you would like to purchase as a souvenir to take home, you can find within one of the many stores in Ala Moana Mall. There is a stage in the center of the mall where local performances take place regularly. Enjoy hula dancing, singing, or even the taping of a local show called "Hawaii Stars."

Many people forget that Hawaii is not just beaches and relaxation--there is much business and industry on the island of Oahu. Bishop Street in Downtown Honolulu is a great example of this, and boasts the tallest building on the Hawaii Islands, the First Hawaiian Center, as well as many other skyscrapers. The Hawaiian State Art Museum is also found downtown, and houses several galleries of painting by local Hawaiian artists.
