More About Diamond Head
The Diamond Head Crater in Honolulu is an historic area and a great place to visit. The Diamond Head Trail runs up side of the now extinct volcano that the ancient Hawaiians named Laeahi (or "brow of the tuna" - apparently based on the shape of the crater). British sailors, upon sighting the crater in the 19th century, bestowed the name "Diamond Head" upon the volcano, mistaking the glint of calcite crystals embedded in the lava for precious gems. There is little to no shade on the three quarters mile hike up the trail, so plan your hike for the early morning and bring water. The hike is not particularly challenging, but the unpaved trail is strewn with rocks and there are several sets of steep stairs. Upon reaching the summit of the crater, you will enjoy one of the best views in Honolulu (you can see Waikiki Beach and practically the entire west side of the island). You can also explore the abandoned tunnels and lookout point of old Fort Ruger, the first United States military reservation in Hawaii. The fort was built when the United States annexed the Hawaiian islands in 1898, and served as a defense for the harbor below. Both the tunnel system under the fort and the natural defense of the crater wall helped to disguise and hide the cannons, and the observation deck built in 1908 provided a strategic lookout point. Parts of the old army base were filmed as an Iraqi prison in the TV series "Lost".
Another interesting view is the Diamond Head Lighthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built in 1899, the lighthouse is property of the US Coast Guard and is the residence of the 14th Coast Guard District Commander. The original lens is still in use, though the current reinforced concrete structure dates from 1917. Unfortunately, there is no public access to the lighthouse, though you can drive by it.
